Ilhan Omar is an American politician serving as the U.S. representative for Minnesota’s 5th congressional district since 2019. She is a member of the Democratic–Farmer–Labour Party.

Omar was raised in Baidoa, Somalia, and was born on October 4, 1982, in Mogadishu, Somalia. She had seven siblings, including her sister Sahra Noor, and was the youngest.
Her father, Nur Omar Mohamed, was a colonel in the Somali army under Siad Barre and also a teacher training. He is a native Somali from the Majeerteen clan in northeastern Somalia. When Ilhan was two years old, her Benadiri mother Fadhuma Abukar Haji Hussein passed away.
Her father and grandfather, both moderate Sunni Muslims who rejected the dogmatic Wahhabi interpretation of Islam, nurtured her. Some of Omar’s uncles and aunts were also employed as civil workers and educators, while her grandpa Abukar served as the director of Somalia’s National Marine Transport.
For four years, she and her family resided in a Dadaab refugee camp in Garissa County, Kenya, not far from the Somali border, after fleeing Somalia to avoid the Somali Civil War.
