A diesel fuel leak has led Galesburg to temporarily close Lake Storey, according to an email from the city.
The Galesburg Fire Department responded to a diesel fuel leak in the 3100 block of Log City Trail near South Lake Storey on February 8 and used large absorbent booms to help manage the spill.
The Illinois Department of Central Management Services, as the owner of the original leak contamination site, is currently using a remediation contractor, along with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, to clean up the spill. The Galesburg Fire Department worked with the State of Illinois and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency on an immediate hazard mitigation response to minimize impacts, the email says.
Lake Storey is currently closed to all water access, including boating, swimming and wading, to allow space for clean-up efforts and prevent residents and pets from exposure to any potential water contamination. Signs will be posted at lake access points and parking areas to notify park patrons that water access at Lake Storey Park is currently closed. The closure is expected to be temporary, and the city will release more information once the lake is open for water access.
